The Spektra Art Project

Small local gallery to national reach for SA artists

How QKON Bytes Built the Spektra Art Online Platform: Digitizing a Local Gallery Into a Modern Art Marketplace

When Spektra Art Gallery approached us, they already held a respected presence within the local art community of Centurion, Gauteng. Their exhibitions, curated collections and support of South African artists were compelling, but their reach was limited by geography. Their vision was clear: bring the gallery experience online and create a digital environment that preserves the intimacy of art appreciation while modernizing sales, sign-ups and artist onboarding.

At QKON Bytes, this type of transformation aligns perfectly with our ethos. We don’t only place businesses online—we help them scale, automate, and evolve into digital-first brands. Our challenge was to build Spektra a platform that could do three things exceptionally well:

  1. Showcase exhibitions (past, present, and upcoming)

  2. Sell artwork from local and emerging South African artists

  3. Streamline gallery workflows and automate operational processes

1. Translating the Gallery Experience Into a Digital Format

Physical galleries rely on emotion, atmosphere and narrative. A typical e-commerce structure does not capture that—so we designed something different.

We developed an online environment that:

  • Presents exhibitions as curated experiences rather than simple product grids.

  • Uses high-resolution artwork displays and artistic storytelling.

  • Highlights the artist behind the work, not just the canvas.

Instead of sterile product pages, we implemented visual layouts that feel immersive and personal, allowing:

  • Artist profiles

  • Exhibition pages

  • Art statements

  • Limited edition or one-of-one pieces

  • Past collections archived as digital galleries

Our goal was not to “sell art”—it was to elevate the art and give it a home worthy of a gallery.

2. Artist Catalog Development and Marketplace Architecture

Spektra Art Online needed more than a store—they needed a marketplace for local artists.

We architected a catalog system that supports:

  • Multiple artists with unique collections

  • Biographies, origin stories and artistic journeys

  • Second-hand artworks and re-sale pieces

  • Different mediums (paintings, sculpture, prints, mixed media, etc.)

  • Pricing models based on artist agreements

  • Inventory levels tied to single or multi-edition artworks

Unlike conventional retail, art is not always restocked. The system therefore had to handle:

  • One-of-a-kind items

  • Limited numbered editions

  • Commissioned works

  • Pieces unavailable until verified by the gallery

This flexible product architecture gives the gallery the ability to onboard new artists at any time without technical friction.

3. Hosting Current and Past Exhibitions

Spektra’s exhibitions are the soul of their brand, so exhibition management became a core feature.

We built a dynamic content structure that allows the team to:

Showcase Current Exhibitions

  • Curated landing pages

  • Artist lineup

  • Artwork groups

  • Exhibition descriptions and themes

  • Limited sets and opening announcements

Archive Past Exhibitions

  • Highlights and collections

  • Featured artists

  • Sold items (marked as unavailable)

  • Historical cataloging

This enables the website to preserve Spektra’s artistic legacy while continuously promoting upcoming events.

4. Gallery-Specific Forms and Automated Internal Workflows

Because Spektra functions as both a gallery and a retail entity, workflow automation was non-negotiable.

We implemented:

  • Artist sign-up forms

  • Product submission forms for new artworks

  • Artwork appraisal / second-hand submission flow

  • Contact and inquiry forms

  • Commission request forms

Each form is mapped into an internal process pipeline.

The system handles:

  • Lead or inquiry intake

  • Routing to the gallery team

  • Automated confirmations

  • Internal review steps

  • Ticketing for admin tasks

  • CRM record creation (Zoho-ready)

  • Status tracking and follow-ups

This removed paper files, email chaos, and inbox bottlenecks. Every request becomes a recorded workflow instead of a loose conversation.

5. E-Commerce Layer Built for Art

Selling art online is different from selling apparel or spare parts.

We created a store experience that specifically supports the nature of art sales:

  • Informational artwork pages with visible pricing and availability

  • Artist narratives displayed with their collections

  • Safe checkout environment for high-value purchases

  • Stock tied to unique pieces (1/1, 1/10, etc.)

  • Clear ownership and provenance

Every piece feels intentional, not transactional.

6. Building a Platform for Proudly South African Artists

Spektra’s mission is tied deeply to local talent.

We reflected that mission in the platform design by enabling:

  • Profile sections that speak to identity, culture, and craft

  • Collections organized per artist

  • Tags for:

    • South African artists

    • Emerging talent

    • Medium specialties

    • Exhibition participants

The platform elevates each creator—not just the art on the wall.

7. Backend Simplicity for Long-Term Growth

Gallery teams are creative, not technical. We built the backend so Spektra staff can manage:

  • New artist onboarding

  • Adding new artworks

  • Updating availability

  • Uploading exhibition pages

  • Adding second-hand pieces

  • Creating marketing content

No coding required.
No complicated CMS logic.
No dependency on a developer for basic operations.

The gallery controls its digital showcase as confidently as it hosts a physical one.

8. What Spektra Art Online Represents

Spektra Art Online is more than a digital shop—it is a digital extension of a physical gallery.

It demonstrates QKON Bytes’ ability to design commerce platforms that reflect the soul of a business. For this project, we didn’t build “another store”—we built a curated digital experience where art, artists, and the gallery’s identity coexist naturally.

We helped Spektra:

  • Digitize their exhibitions

  • Expand reach beyond Centurion

  • Empower local South African artists

  • Manage inventory of one-of-a-kind works

  • Automate their internal processes

  • Present their curated heritage online

Most importantly, we preserved the human element of art—while giving it global accessibility.
